Library Director, Tri-Township Public Library, Troy, IL

The Tri Township Library District is a newly renovated and rebranded library seeking a dynamic and experienced Library Director to lead our thriving institution. This exciting opportunity offers the chance to be part of a growing library and contribute to its continued success.

Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Board of Trustees, the Library Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the library's operations. This includes planning, budgeting, staff management, community engagement, and assisting the Board with long-range planning and policy development. The Director will also manage library resources, organize collections, design and implement programs, and oversee building maintenance. The Library Director has ultimate responsibility for hiring and supervising all employees and volunteers.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attend Board meetings, unless excused, and present requests that have been submitted.
  • In partnership with the Board of Trustees, write and maintain an official mission statement for the library and develop long range plans to address anticipated community needs.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate library services as established by the Board of Trustees.
  • Prepare reports and other necessary statistical information.
  • With the Policy Committee, develop and prepare updates of the Policy Manual for the Board of Trustees approval and assist in implementation of those policies.
  • With the Personnel Committee, develop and prepare updates of the Personnel Manual for the Board of Trustees approval and assist in the implementation of those policies.
  • With the Finance Committee, develop an annual budget, review monthly financial reports to ensure accountability to budget goals and oversee all Library expenditures in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Provide financial information and an independent audit as required by Illinois law.
  • With the Finance Committee, advocate for funding necessary to meet Library needs through grants, fundraising and partnerships as necessary.
  • Prepare ordinances, legal notices, grant applications (federal, state and foundation) and complete the required Annual Report for the state of Illinois.
  • Review and propose salary and benefit plans for the library staff.
  • Hire, supervise, evaluate, discipline, and dismiss personnel, within Board guidelines. Ensure that new employees receive orientation and training and that all employees receive in-service and development training.
  • Maintain personnel files.
  • Maintain and post equitable employee work schedules.
  • Act as liaison between the Board and staff.
  • Monitor the process, procedure, and function of all automation equipment.
  • Approve charges for damage to items, wave minor fees or remove disputed items.
  • With the Building and Grounds Committee, assess maintenance of library grounds and buildings and request purchase of lands or construction of new buildings when necessary and appropriate.
  • Represent the Library /District on various professional association committees.
  • Keep abreast of current developments in the library field by reading professional literature and attending conferences, workshops, and other training.
  • Work with Adult and Youth Librarians and Cataloger to oversee the direction and scope of the collection.
  • Oversee the cataloging of appropriate materials in accordance with AACRH, DDC and LCSH in appropriate format.
  • Act as Safety Officer, FOIA Officer and OMA Officer.
  • Perform such other duties as required by law, ordinance or Board action.
  • Able to motivate, establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, volunteers, other community agencies and the public. 

Required Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • MLS or MBA preferred with 4 years related library experience but will consider BA or BS in related area with 5 years related library experience.
  • Knowledge of Illinois Library Act.
  • Able to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of computers, the internet and commercially available library software.
  • Able to work evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrates interest in professional development.
  • Understanding of library administration and supervision principles.
  • Experience as a liaison between the library and the Friends of the Library volunteer group.

Salary Range:

  • $55,000-65,000 Yearly (May Vary with Level of Experience)

The Jefferson County Library District (JCLD) invites applications for the role of Executive Director. We are seeking a dynamic and visionary leader to join our Leadership Team and guide our library system, which serves the residents in the vibrant communities of the Fox, Northwest and Windsor School Districts. This position will be based at the business office, located in High Ridge, MO.

Key Responsibilities:

Under the general guidance of the Board of Trustees, and alongside the Leadership Team, the Executive Director will:

- Develop and maintain a comprehensive library service program that meets the diverse needs of the communities served by JCLD.

- Lead the library in its mission to provide community-centered services by planning and collaborating with community organizations and staff.

- Foster a People-First workplace culture, building strong relationships with all stakeholders, including staff, the Board of Trustees, patrons,   and the communities within JCLD.

- Exemplify excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, fostering an environment where all individuals feel valued and respected.

- Oversee and direct the Library’s operations.- Ensure the delivery of high quality library programs and services throughout the regional system.

- Direct and participate in the development and administration of the annual operating and other assigned budgets; monitor and authorize expenditures according to policy.

- Evaluate, determine, and request additional funds necessary for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies.- Establish appropriate service levels and allocate resources including staffing accordingly.

- Monitor and evaluate service delivery methods and procedures; identify and implement changes necessary to improve operational efficiency.

- Serve as a representative of the Library with outside agencies, community organizations and other stakeholders and the media.- Respond to inquiries involving library-related matters; negotiate and resolve complex, sensitive, and/or controversial issues and complaints.

- Serve as technical advisor to the Board; attend all board meetings and oversee the preparation of materials for all meetings.

- Maintain membership in state and national professional organizations and attend appropriate meetings and workshops.- Stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of public library management.

- Monthly (minimum) travel to each branch.

Established in 1989, JCLD now provides public library services to two library sub-districts in Missouri:

- Fox-Windsor Subdistrict

- Northwest Subdistrict

Summary Description

The University of Missouri Libraries (MU Libraries) invites applications for the full-time, NTT Librarian position of Head of Special Collections. The collections are diverse and range from a substantial rare book collection with material dating to the eighth century to the comic arts collection, focused on underground comics, classic comic strips, graphic novels, and journalism collections, including the Husni Magazine Collection. The collections include books, periodicals, manuscripts, maps, posters, printed ephemera, and artifacts. Materials in Special Collections total over 200,000 items. The collections are a heavily used resource that supports a busy program of reference, instruction, and outreach to the University of Missouri community and beyond.

The MU Libraries’ seek a leader who will provide direction, administration, and long-term planning for Special Collections. The Head of Special Collections is responsible for developing and implementing policies and procedures, supervision of employees, and initiatives relating to the department's daily operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for collection development and management, teaching and outreach, and coordination and provision of reference service, and will work closely with the Libraries’ Director of Advancement on fundraising and development activities. The Head of Special Collections also contributes to collection promotion, outreach, and exhibits. Special Collections is co-located with University Archives.

The selected candidate will be an integral part of our team working to implement a new climate-controlled, secured shelving space for rare and archival materials. Responsibilities will include regular meetings with our architects, PGAV, and consultants from Image Permanence Institute, to ensure that their plans adequately address our collection storage needs and take into account access and workflow issues. This position will also be responsible for a master plan for use of the space once renovations are complete.  Work on this project is enabled by a prestigious $500,000 Infrastructure and Capacity Building Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

Responsibilities

  • Manages Special Collections personnel, facilities, and funds in compliance with administrative policies of the University of Missouri. Administratively supervises librarians, staff, and student assistants. Oversees and participates in training of department staff as appropriate, including patron service expectations and goals.
  • Provides reference services to patrons in person, by telephone, or virtually. Provides bibliographic instruction for classes and other groups.
  • Actively pursues and develops outreach to faculty and students that encourages the inclusion of special collections materials in the curriculum. Works closely with faculty, students, alumni, and others in the wider community to interpret the collections and promote an understanding of their value to teaching and scholarship.
  • Oversees and/or prepares finding aids, catalogs, or other publications to improve access to the collections.
  • Cooperates in the planning and design of the departmental website, including planning and preparation of online exhibits. Contributes to and assists in special research, bibliographic, and exhibition projects.
  • Expands awareness of Special Collections holdings through exhibits, publications, instructional programs, presentations, and lectures.
  • Prioritizes materials for cataloging. As needed, develops bibliographic control standards for special collections materials, including metadata for digital materials.
  • Maintains and updates the collection development policy for Special Collections.
  • Identifies and recommends materials in Special Collections holdings that are suitable for digitizing. Works closely with the Digital Initiatives unit on planning for digital library projects.
  • Works with the Preservation & Conservation Librarian to maintain a proper environment for the preservation, safety and security of the Special Collections and its collections. Responsible for departmental security policies and procedures.
  • Cooperatively works with other staff members in collection development for the major collecting areas of the Department.  Makes budgetary and spending decisions in matters of acquisition of new materials. Evaluates prospective gift items for addition to the collections. Works with the Acquisitions Department to track expenditures of appropriated and gift funds for Special Collections materials.
  • Works with the University Librarian and the Libraries’ Advancement Officer to advance the MU Libraries’ relationship with current and prospective donors and assist as needed in with fund-raising initiatives.
  • Participates in professional activities beyond the library as appropriate and maintains current awareness of trends and developments in rare books and special collections, including digital libraries and digital preservation.
  • Participates in general library administration and planning activities as appropriate.
  • Represents the Division in appropriate meetings at the campus or university levels.

Education: MLS from an ALA accredited program required.

Candidates will be evaluated on:

  • Record of successful leadership experience in an equivalent or similar position
  • Years of experience in special collections libraries or rare books collection within an academic or research library
  • Experience with long-term planning for Special Collections

  • Supervisory experience and skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of the role of primary source material in the research process
  • Teaching experience, including creating online resources guides and tutorials
  • Course work in rare books, preservation or completion of additional graduate work or other relevant continuing education offerings
  • Familiarity with the history of books and printing and the antiquarian book trade
  • Awareness of preservation practice and issues for print, and digital materials
  • Reading knowledge of at least one classical or modern language other than English
  • Experience in managing digitization projects and awareness of national standards and best practices for creating digital collections
  • Experience with developing and maintaining web sites
  • Additional graduate degree in an appropriate subject area

Salary

Salary and librarian rank will be commensurate with experience. This position holds non-tenure track (NTT) faculty status.

Summary

 The Kansas City Public Library is a doorway to knowledge for all people in our community. In addition to providing library services to residents, the Library also serves as a resource for the 1.7 million metropolitan residents of greater Kansas City.   

The Assistant Director / Chief Operating Officer (“Assistant Director”) is a pivotal role within the Kansas City Public Library system. The Assistant Director works in partnership with the Library Director / Chief Executive Officer (“Director”) to lead a vibrant team of professionals. This role will model and nurture a culture of service, collaboration, trust and belonging while setting clear performance standards to inspire a talented team to achieve high performance standards in service to the Kansas City community.  

In alignment with the vision and mission of the Library, the Assistant Director works in partnership with the Director and the executive leadership team to develop comprehensive, strategic plans that ensure coordination and implementation of long-term goals that continue to shape the future of the Library. The Assistant Director will have direct oversight of the finance, information services, human resources, and facility operation departments. The reporting structure within the organization may adapt and change in response to evolving needs and priorities. The Assistant Director will assume the responsibilities of the Director in their absence and work in partnership with the Director and executive administration team to support the members of the Board of Trustees in their responsibilities to the Library. 

Other Things You Should Know 

The Assistant Library Director / COO is full-time exempt position. Starting salary $160,000 DOQ plus an attractive benefit package including health insurance plans, paid life and long-term disability insurance, retirement/paid pension plans, 4 weeks paid vacation leave, 2+ weeks paid sick leave, 1+ week paid personal leave, 10 paid federal holidays, educational assistance options and more. The position is eligible for a hybrid Remote Program (two days per week) after a 6-month training period. This position is open until filled.  

JOB DUTIES (Essential Functions):

  1. Represents the Library and assumes the roles and responsibilities of the Director in their absence; works collaboratively with other members of the executive leadership team; actively leads and constructively participates in comprehensive and strategic planning.
  2. Leads and coordinates assigned initiatives to assure strategic alignment of operational and strategic Library goals.
  3. The Assistant Director is responsible for establishing a culture of collaborative decision-making and effective communication throughout the organization. This position actively works to build strong relationships and trust while articulating an ambitious, clear vision for the future of the Library. 
  4. Leads and provides oversight of assigned departments, including establishing departmental priorities, monitoring operational and leadership performance of executive leadership and other professional staff and nurturing an environment of constructive feedback and development. 
  5. Ability to develop and deliver regular written and verbal reports on both routine and special projects to both the Director and to the Library Board of Trustees, as required. 
  6. Establishes individual performance goals for staff and nurtures a culture of accountability. Works in partnership with the Director to ensure the Library’s recruitment, training and development, and human resource practices both attract and retain talented, high-performing staff. Regularly works with direct reports to develop, coach, and reset performance expectations, if needed.
  7. Direct oversight of risk management and contract review functions. 
  8. Establishes and cultivates strong relationships within the community, serving as the Library’s official representative where needed through participation at community meetings and/or through membership with key community organizations. .
  9. Understands the importance and maintains cooperative relationships within the Library system, with other libraries and educational institutions, professional organizations, state and federal agencies, state and federal delegations, legislative bodies, civic organizations, and other critical partners.
  10. Provides consistent, regular support to the executive leadership team and other staff to address internal or external inquiries regarding Library policy, procedures, and statutory and legal requirements. Works with the appropriate organizational staff to regularly review and update policies and procedures where needed.
  11. Performs additional duties as required.

Work Environment

Work is performed at the Library’s Administrative Annex and Library Branches throughout the district. Primary workspace is an office in an office environment, other work will be performed in a public space amongst staff and patrons from a diverse socio-economic community.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and/or their designee, the Senior Director of Finance/CFO is a highly responsible professional who leads and oversees all financial operations of the Library in alignment with the Chief Executive Officer and the Library’s overall goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.

The Sr. Director of Finance/CFO is directly responsible for the Finance department, including all financial services, procurement, and other administrative and business functions as assigned. The general responsibilities of this position include planning, implementation, and assessment of financial and administrative strategies, policies, and procedures which enhance the Library’s core mission. This role works closely with the executive leadership team while serving as a partner and advisor to staff throughout the organization to ensure effective delivery of Library services and programs to the community.

Other Things You Should Know

The Director of Finance / CFO is full-time exempt position. Starting salary $100,000 DOQ plus an attractive benefits package including paid holidays, vacation, sick & personal leave, and paid pension retirement plan. The position is eligible for a hybrid Remote Program (two days per week) after a 6-month training period. This position is open until filled.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Functions as Chief Financial Officer and Budget Officer for the Library, participates in all aspects of planning, budgeting and policy development and assumes authority for financial decisions as directed by Chief Executive Officer and/or their designee. Prepares and participates in presentations to the Board of Trustees in areas of finance and budgeting.
  2. Coordinates the maintenance of the Library’s financial systems, including all aspects of design, procurement and implementation; assumes responsibility for coordination of all audits and the preparation of the Library’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report; and reviews and monitors recommendations for the expenditure of Library funds.
  3. Oversees, monitors, and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of the Library’s procurement process; assesses and monitors workload, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships; identifies opportunities for improvement; and ensures compliance with board policy for all procurement and bidding processes.
  4. Leads and supervises the Finance department staff and the centralized Purchasing department staff. Responsible for the management and development of the Finance team and meets regularly with staff, addresses and works to resolve concerns in a timely manner and is directly responsible for the oversight of team performance and work culture within the Finance department.
  5. Helps formulate, interpret, and clearly communicate management decisions, directions, policies, and procedures to departmental staff and the public, and relays public and staff needs and suggestions to the executive leadership team.
  6. Maintains and monitors major revenue-generating contracts such as the parking garage operations and other operations as needed; ensures performance and compliance with terms; prepares and submits report and program evaluations; and insures timeliness of renewal.
  7. Performs detailed financial analysis, including related to economic development projects seeking tax incentives from the Library. In cooperation with the Chief Executive Officer and/or their designee, serves to represent the Library and other taxing jurisdictions on the Kansas City TIF Commission and with other tax incentive organizations to promote economic development decisions that have a positive long-term impact on funding while actively working to mitigate immediate or short-term negative impact on taxing jurisdictions.
  8. Represents the Library in professional and educational associations at the local, state, and national level; maintains and nurtures professional relationships, both internal to the organization and external as a partner.
  9. Performs other related work and undertakes special projects as assigned.

Job Requirements

  1. Considerable knowledge of financial and business principles and practices; and the ability to apply this knowledge in the library setting.
  2. Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills.
  3. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, along with attention to detail.
  4. Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
  5. Considerable knowledge of computer technology and its utilization in business operations.
  6. Ability to analyze development projects, business issues, and managerial problems and recommend solutions.
  7. Ability to maintain effective internal and external work relationships and good public relations.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance, public or business administration or a closely related field. Master’s degree is preferred.

Five years of senior level leadership and ten years professional accounting or fund/governmental accounting experience with an emphasis in financial, administrative and/or technological areas of an equivalent education and/or experience is preferred.

CPA or other relevant qualification is preferred.

The St. Louis Mercantile Library at the University of Missouri-St. Louis is seeking an outstanding emerging scholar for a full-time, donor-funded, term position Early Career Library Fellow. The position provides an invaluable professional development opportunity to a scholar interested in pursuing a library career. The selected fellow will develop practical skills in all areas of library and archival practice including collections cataloguing, digitization, management and planning, and public service, while participating fully in the intellectual life of the library. The fellow will work alongside an ensemble of dedicated professionals to perform duties related to the physical care, documentation, and preservation of archival and manuscript collections and to advance digital access to the vast holdings of this 178-year-old rare book and special collections library.

The St. Louis Mercantile Library holds historic archival, rare book and manuscript collections in the areas of transnational as well as local Missouri and regional histories, Native Americana, African Americana, westward expansion, American business history, exemplary transportation holdings in river and rail history, as well as a growing collection of Missouri and American art and artists’ archives. The Mercantile’s collections overall form a prestigious historical research center for a wide variety of users, and is a bibliographical laboratory for deep historical research and investigation. The Mercantile Library is affiliated with the University of Missouri – St. Louis, a distinguished public land-grant university that is part of the University of Missouri system and is eastern Missouri’s premier public research university. Its 470-acre north St. Louis County campus is home to one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse student bodies in Missouri, comprised of nearly 16,000 students from 49 states and over 70 countries.

Responsibilities of this position include, under the supervision of curatorial and cataloging staff;

  1. Accessioning, processing, and cataloging new acquisitions and backlog holdings.
  2. Participating in the facilitation of scholarly access to, and ensuring long-term preservation of, the special collections.
  3. Collaborating with colleagues to enhance discovery of Library holdings through online access and digitization projects.
  4. Overseeing the care and handling of special collections material while being digitized.
  5. Preparing online and print finding aids, catalogs, or other resources to provide access to collections in accordance with the standards and best practices of the profession.
  6. Providing administrative support related to collections use, storage, and research.
  7. Participating in special events and programs which include evenings and weekends.

Requirements:

Must have graduated from an ALA-accredited institution with a Master’s degree in Library Information Science within the 18 months preceding the application deadline.

The St. Louis Mercantile Library at the University of Missouri-St. Louis is seeking an experienced special collections cataloger for a full-time, donor-funded, two-year term position to address a backlog of historic maps, prints and broadsides. The Mercantile Library, now in its 178th year holds broad and deep collections of rare books, manuscripts, and archives that cover all eras of American history, especially westward expansion, American business history, and comprehensive transportation holdings in river and rail history as well as a distinguished collection of American art and graphics. The Mercantile Library affiliated with the University of Missouri in 1997 to make its collections more accessible to national and international users as well as to local students, and is located on the campus of the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

The cataloguer is an essential member of the Mercantile Library’s enthusiastic curatorial team and is responsible for describing and facilitating access to the special collections of the St. Louis Mercantile Library via the library’s catalogue. The cataloguer will be responsible for original and copy-cataloguing of maps, broadsides, newspapers, and other large format special collections for public access. The position will report to and work with the Director of the St. Louis Mercantile Library to set cataloging priorities. The successful candidate will have a minimum of two years of relevant cataloging experience.

Specific duties of the position include:

- In collaboration with the Mercantile Library Director, establish cataloging priorities, and design and implement project plans to execute those priorities.

- Perform original and copy cataloging of maps, broadsides, and other large format special collections with particular emphasis on the research and accessibility value of the catalog description.

- Work in conjunction with the University Libraries Access Services department and colleagues in the Mercantile Library cataloguing department to ensure that the St. Louis Mercantile Library’s catalog conforms to the requirements of the FOLIO system.

- Ensure appropriate conservation measures are applied to cataloged items to ensure safe and proper storage.

- Effectively communicate with team members and other members of the library community, while contributing to and sustaining a supportive and inclusive workplace.

- Adhere to the Collected Rules and Regulations of the University of Missouri System.

- Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

- ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library and Information Science.

- Minimum 2 years of relevant cataloging experience.

- Working knowledge of online library systems, AACR2r, RDA, LCRI, LCSH, DCRM, MARC21 formats and authority control.

- Ability to build and sustain effective interpersonal relationships with library staff, faculty, students, administrators, and members of the public.

- Evidence of analytical, organization, communication, project, and time management skills and demonstrated ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and complete tasks and projects on time and within budget in accordance with task or project parameters.

- Demonstrated proficiency with personal computers and software, the internet and office applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint, and other productivity software.

- Demonstrated knowledge of proper preservation techniques for maps, broadsides, or other large-format rare materials.

- Ability to work in a dynamic office environment with a diverse user base.

- Must be eligible to work in the United States and pass standard University of Missouri System screenings and background checks.

Preferred Qualifications

- Familiarity with cataloging large format and cartographic materials.

- Familiarity with FOLIO cataloging software.

- Experience in applied preservation techniques for large-format rare materials in a special collections’ environment.

- Reading knowledge of one modern Western European language in addition to English; reading knowledge of other Western European languages a plus.
