In Fall 2024, the Missouri Library Association launched the You Belong Scholar Program, a statewide initiative aimed at retaining and developing Missouri library workers from historically underrepresented groups. We are excited to announce applications will accepted starting Monday, January 12. The deadline has been extended through Sunday, February 15, 2026 for our second cohort of scholars.
Watch a short virtual information session for more information about what it means to be a You Belong Scholar (passcode VyTK8%?y) and check out the slides from that presentation.
Anyone who is (1) working in any capacity in any type of library in Missouri, (2) earning either an undergraduate degree or a Master’s in Library and Information Science, and (3) self-identifies as belonging to at least one historically underrepresented group. Five recipients will be chosen for the 2026 cohort.
Undergraduate You Belong Scholars will receive:
- $4,200 stipend to use towards tuition and/or a computer.
- Travel, registration & meal expenses to attend MLA’s Annual Conference to participate in a Leadership Academy (temporary dependent care costs are also available).
- 1:1 mentorship from library professionals from historically underrepresented groups.
Graduate MLIS You Belong Scholars will receive:

Next, you will be asked to share (1) how the You Belong Scholars Program will help you overcome barriers you’ve experienced in achieving your professional goals and (2) what experiences you have had or knowledge you bring that would contribute to the success of the other members of the cohort. Finally, you'll be invited to upload your resume (optional), transcripts (unofficial are acceptable), and your college/MLIS acceptance letter.
Recipients will be notified in late February 2026.
All applications and related materials must be submitted no later than Sunday, February 15, 2026. This includes resumes, transcripts, and acceptance letters.
