PRIMARY DUTY: As an integral member of the library leadership team, the Head of Research and Instruction provides vision and direction for the research and instruction team. This position reports to the Director of Library Services and Operations. This role also serves on the library leadership team to support the overall library mission and goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist the Director by serving on the leadership team to provide direction and supervision that ensures the library’s mission and goals align with institutional priorities and philosophies.
  • Provide leadership in library instruction and research support for academic services that align with institutional priorities and philosophies.
  • Lead the Reference and Instruction team in planning, implementing and assessing pedagogically appropriate instruction for library users; and providing in-depth, specialized research consultation and reference services.
  • Directly supervises, establishes divisional goals and objectives, manages schedules, monitors instruction trends, and creates workflows for the reference and instruction team.
  • Partner with co-workers and academic faculty to deliver general education and subject-specific academic research instruction in-person and online.
  • Utilize course management software, responsive web development tools, and library course guides to create research content for the curriculum and online instructional materials that support departmental mission and vision for academic achievement.
  • Serve as liaison to a number of disciplines, collaborate with library and university colleagues on procurement of appropriate materials to support the curriculum and research.
  • Assist library personnel and patrons with library catalog issues such as location of an item or the steps to borrow an item via ILL.
  • Assist in hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating student employees.
  • Serve on library, institutional and consortia working groups and teams, as necessary.
  • Perform other duties and assignments as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: ALA Accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science

Experience: Three to five years of supervisory experience in an academic library; evidence of developing and delivering training; coaching, and mentorship of employees; demonstrated experience in completing projects in a team environment

Skills: Strong leadership, customer service, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; strong analytical abilities; ability to work independently as well as in cooperation with diverse populations; ability to handle multiple responsibilities in a rapidly changing environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS: This position will work in a library environment with the day shift hours Monday through Friday with a lunch break with the possibility of varied hours as needed for special events. Must be able to move throughout the library to assist in the library collection maintenance activities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervises Research librarians.

EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS USED: Computers, overhead projectors, microform, paper copier

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Primary sedentary work, but also requires standing, walking, stooping or crouching, kneeling, crawling, reaching, pushing, grasping and lifting. Requires the ability to exert up to approximately 35 pounds of force to occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move carts/boxes of books/materials. Ability to concentrate on detailed information over an extended period of time

Major Job Duties

  • Catalogs collections using the LC and NLM cataloging and classification systems while ensuring inclusivity and diversity representation in catalog entries.
  • Assists with the management of the library's electronic resources, primarily updating holdings in eBook and serials collections, and enhancing their discoverability in the catalog, discovery layer, and other outlets, with a focus on inclusive content.

  • Works collaboratively with other librarians and paraprofessionals to manage access to collections and further digital project initiatives that prioritize diverse voices and perspectives.
  • Manages Still ScholarWorks, ATSU's institutional repository, with a dedication to promoting a wide range of scholarly contributions from diverse authors and backgrounds.
  • Delivers high-level customer service, including answering questions, recommending resources, and providing instruction and/or educational sessions, always considering the diverse needs of library patrons.
  • Seeks innovative ways to improve efficiency and customer service while fostering an inclusive an welcoming library environment.
  • Leads digital library projects that champion inclusivity and diversity in digital collections, ensuring they reflect a wide range of perspectives and voices.
  • Participates in planning, implementing, and configuring the library's ILS, discovery system, and other collection management tools, with a focus on enhancing access to diverse resources and ensuring an inclusive user experience.

Job Responsibilities

  • Creates entry points to access print and electronic collections.
  • Maintains the librarys ILS system within a consortia environment.
  • Manages ATSU 2023-2024 migration to Ensco's Folio system in conjunction with the MOBIUS consortium.
  • Curates metadata files for export to external (ex OCLC) and internal/external partners.
  • Provides reference services on an as-needed basis at the Kirksville, Missouri, campus.
  • Leads assigned technology-related projects and troubleshooting when needed.
  • Serves on library and university committees, as well as being active within professional library organizations.

Requirements and Preferences

  • ALA-accredited MLS degree.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of cataloging and metadata standards such as Dublin Core.
  • Familiarity with creating and editing metadata for digital resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively with other including faculty, students, and staff.
  • Ability to work with people virtually.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Proficiency using OCLC and performing original and copy cataloging.
  • Familiarity with library computer databases and tools.
  • 1-2 years of cataloging or tech services experience preferred.
  • Experience with Innovative's Sierra or Ebsco's Folio preferred.
  • Institutional repository management a plus.

Job Description

The Library Director is responsible for the overall management and operation of the library, including implementing policies set by the Library Board, overseeing staff and budget, managing library collections, and representing the library in the community. The Library Director ensures that library services meet the needs of the community, and that the library operates efficiently and effectively within its resources.

Responsibilities

Minimum Requirements to Apply

MLS or MBA preferred with 4 years related library experience but will consider BA or BS in related area with 5 years related library experience.

Knowledge to communicate both orally and in writing

Able to work evenings and weekends and cover for staff when needed

Library Director

The Adair County Public Library, located in Kirksville, MO, is currently accepting resumes and seeking highly qualified and motivated applicants for the position of Library Director. Under the direction of the Board of Trustees, the Library Director develops, supervises and coordinates the work of the Library and staff, performs managerial duties related to personnel, budget, collection development, building maintenance and library operations and services in conformity to the policies established by the Board of Trustees and Missouri State Statutes.

A Master's Degree in Library Science from an accredited college or university OR 5 years progressively responsible library administration including 3 years of supervisory experience is preferred.
