Assistant Branch Manager - Westport Branch, Kansas City Public Library, Kansas City, MO

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Plaza and Westport Sr. Manager, manages daily operations at the Branch Library. Assists the assigned Manager with the operation and maintenance of the branch and assumes the responsibilities of the Branch Manager in their absence to provide quality library service to all Library patrons. The position also works closely with outside organizations to deliver programs and build partnerships. The position provides excellent customer service demonstrating the ability to communicate effectively with people regardless of age, race, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, ability level, or background.

Other Things You Should Know

Full-time exempt position. Starting salary is $49,137 plus excellent benefits. The basic schedule is Mon-Thurs 9-6 and Friday 8:30-5:00 with some Saturdays required: additional hours will sometimes be required at this or another branch. Position open until filled.

Job Duties

  • Schedules staff, substitutes, and volunteers while monitoring attendance to ensure adequate staffing. Approves time sheets for assigned staff. Resolves issues and notifies Plaza and Westport Sr. Manager of impact to services or personnel.
  • Supervises assigned staff to ensure productivity and quality of service.
  • Maintains safe, secure, and inclusive environment, completing incident reports and making management aware of trends and issues.
  • Facilitates basic circulation and registration services to assure patrons ready access to library materials: charges and discharges library materials; issues library cards; collects fees; clears patron records; explains and interprets circulation and conduct policies and procedures; pulls unclaimed reserves.
  • As the Westport Branch is a facility designated by the Department of State to accept and process United States Passport applications, serves as the Passport Facility Manager. Assures smooth operation of the function, orders passport supplies, answers questions (if any) from the Department of State, and trains new staff in the processing function.
  • Performs circulation and collection maintenance control duties: maintains and troubleshoots self-check machines, schedules a regular shelf reading schedule, and monitors Library displays and merchandising
  • Works with other Library departments to facilitate access to services and information.
  • Schedules and provides public training sessions in the use of Library resources, computers, digital devices and other resources and equipment available to patrons. Assesses the need of such trainings and adjusts to best suit the community's need.
  • Provides research assistance to patrons using all resources available in the Library as well as accessing outside resources.
  • Provides reading, viewing, and listening advisory assistance to library patrons.
  • Works with the Plaza and Westport Sr. Manager and engages community partners to develop programs and provide services to meet the needs of existing patrons and to attract new patrons.
  • Participates in hiring, training, and evaluating staff to ensure the Library staff can give the highest quality service.
  • Ensures effective, courteous working relationship with all Library patrons; resolves patron issues using the Library’s customer service policy.
  • Performs office tasks such as preparing and submitting deposits, ordering supplies, and other organizational tasks.

Job Requirements

Additional consideration may be given to individuals that are fluent in any non-English languages spoken in the Kansas City area including Somali, Swahili, Spanish, Arabic, French, Dari, Pashto, and Vietnamese.
  • Minimum qualifications include a master’s degree in library/information science or equivalent combination of education, work experience with emphasis on public service, and life experience.

Resources Development Librarian, Webster University, St. Louis, MO

Resources Development Librarian
The Resources Development Librarian (RDL) manages the library’s materials and membership budget lines, totaling $1.4 million, and directs all aspects of ordering, receiving, and paying for library materials. These materials are the core of the library’s resources for the Webster University global community. The work of the Resources Development Librarian (RDL) ensures that library funds are expended, and materials are made available in a way that best meets the needs of our students and faculty.

The RDL is responsible for managing all aspects of the workflow for the library’s 80,000+ online and print journal subscriptions, supervises paraprofessional staff in this effort. To ensure the best value and service, the RDL evaluates and recommends updates and changes to the vendors the library uses for books and periodicals.

The RDL reports to the Director of Library Resources and Access Services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage acquisitions and library materials budget: 50%

  1. Supervises acquisition of library materials (excepting online databases), including monographs and serials in all formats for Webster’s main library and U.S. extended campuses as well as Eden Seminary.
  2. Manages the library’s materials and membership budget lines, totaling approximately $1.4 million. Each year, analyzes spending patterns and leads the Library Budget Task force in developing a financial forecast to ensure timely and appropriate expenditure of funds.
  3. Reviews financial records for all library materials appropriations and expenditures . Reconciles account balances between the library’s acquisitions system and Webster University’s accounting system. Regularly leads communication with library’s Management Team and subject librarians regarding budget position; ensures that funds are expended appropriately and in a timely manner. Performs fiscal close annually for Webster and Eden, including running year-end reports and resetting fund balances.
  4. Works closely with the Finance Department to ensure that the library’s financial processes adhere to Webster and accounting best practices. Leads implementation of financial process changes in the library.
  5. Applies payments in ILS; reviews invoices for Webster materials in the Concur system and submits for approval and payment by the Business Office.
  6. Reviews options for electronic invoicing; if feasible, works with vendor and library staff to implement
  7. Leads the library’s efforts in the upcoming ILS migration to FOLIO for all orders, finance, and invoices modules.
  8. Works with Webster’s procurement and information technology department for the upcoming Student Information System, Jenzabar One migration
  9. Serves as a resource for staff in solving complex resources development problems.

Manage the workflow for the library’s online and print journal subscriptions: 30%

  1. Manages journal and standing order subscriptions:
    1. Assists the Director of the Library Resources and Access Services in creating, evaluating, and updating procedures for online and print titles.
    2. Manages the annual print and online journal renewal process for Webster’s main and U.S. extended campuses and Eden Seminary. Provides subject librarians with usage, pricing, and vendor background knowledge needed to make decisions on subscriptions. Monitors and reports on price increases for print and online titles. Ensure timely completion of renewal decisions.
    3. Works with vendors to order, cancel, and change format for journal and standing order subscriptions per subject liaison decisions. Oversees communication to resolve problems with receipt of materials, invoicing, and payment.
    4. As requested subscription additions, changes, and deletions occur, supervises the departmental team in updating the catalog to reflect the changes promptly and accurately to ensure optimal access for our students and faculty.
    5. Coordinates with vendors and University mail & copy to improve delivery times for periodical materials.
    6. Maintains or supervises maintenance of order and check in record information in ILS for journal and standing order subscriptions.
    7. Formulates and oversees processes to ensure accuracy of standing orders and journal subscription data ongoing.
  2. Oversees and analyzes major services and implements the following reviews on a rotating basis:
    1. Conducts thorough review of book purchasing processes and examines vendor performance (delivery times, cost, etc.) and ordering and invoicing procedures. Evaluates alternative vendors; if needed, works with Procurement to coordinate bid process to select new vendor(s).
    2. Supervises journal vendor performance evaluation from current and alternative vendors; if needed, coordinates bid process with Procurement to select new vendor(s) when contract expires.
    3. Oversees and regularly reviews binding processes and contracts and recommends tactics to realize efficiencies and cost savings. Evaluates performance of binding vendor(s) and reviews offerings from alternative vendors; if needed, coordinates bid process with Procurement to select new vendor(s).

Serves as Subject Liaison to one or more Academic Department: 15%

  1. Serves as the library’s subject liaison with one or more departments of Webster University; solicits purchase suggestions from faculty, selects materials for purchase in the relevant subject areas, and monitors expenditures on library materials for the department(s).
  2. Works with faculty to select materials in all formats to support the curriculum.
  3. Teaches library instruction classes for department, as time permits.

Other Departmental Tasks 5%

  1. Assists the Director of Resources and Access Services with interviewing and selecting full-time professional, paraprofessional, and clerical staff.
  2. Evaluates departmental record retention processes, with an eye to ensuring preservation of critical information while reducing unnecessary printing, filing, and storage of print documents in accordance with General Data Protection Regulation compliance.
  3. Backs up Electronic Resources Librarian in troubleshooting access to library resources and services.
  4. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications For Appointment

Functional/Technical Skills - Essential

  • Graduate degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent.
  • Strong service orientation and interest in anticipating and supporting information users' values and needs.

  • Familiarity with the serials and monographic U.S. and foreign publishing industry.
  • Detailed knowledge of at least one national bibliographic system.
  • Experience with an online invoicing system, preferably Concur, or with accounting or bookkeeping.
  • Experience with an integrated library system, preferably FOLIO.
  • Experience providing access to online databases using EZproxy.

Position Description
Title: Electronic Resources Librarian
Area: Academic - Library Services
Salary: $52,000-$56,000 (yearly)

  1. Basic Function
    The Electronic Resources Librarian is responsible for managing the entire lifecycle of electronic resource management including acquisition, access, administration, support and evaluation for the library collection databases, eBooks, and eJournals.
     
  2. Responsibilities and Authority
    Within the limits of authorized university policies, procedures, programs and budgets, the Electronic Resource Librarian is responsible for and has the authority to accomplish the following duties:
    • Provide collection development for electronic resources, including overseeing the budgeting and acquisition of electronic resources as well as evaluating resources and suggesting areas for improvement.
    • Troubleshoot electronic access issues, and other technical issues, including contacting IT, vendors, faculty/staff, and patrons.
    • Create and evaluate workflows, procedures and policies as they relate to the lifecycle of electronic resource management.
    • Maintain vendor relations as the primary point of contact and negotiate licensing agreements with publishers and other content vendors to meet University terms.
    • Compile statistics and usage data to evaluate electronic resources for presentations, surveys, and reports.
    • Provide e-resource training opportunities for faculty/staff, as well as organize trainings for students.
    • Maintain a relevant knowledge of electronic resource management topics and trends.
    • Other duties as assigned.
     
  3. Relationships
    The Electronic Resources Librarian reports to the Director of Library Services for the interpretation and execution of responsibilities.
     
  4. Performance Measurement Criteria
    An annual performance review will be conducted by the Director of Library Services, including an assessment of the performance of all tasks related to the position based on a review of the job description and recent performance.
     
  5. Minimum Requirements
    Education & Experience
    • Master’s degree from an American Library Association accredited program.
    • Knowledge of electronic publishing and scholarly communication.
    • Understanding of library operations, trends, and practices.
    • Able to work as part of a team and independently.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Knowledge of database design, markup languages, discovery services, proxy services, standards, protocols and structures.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience working with proxy servers, preferably OpenAthens, e-resource management, integrated library systems/discovery services, specifically EDS and FOLIO.
    • Knowledge of electronic resource licensing, copyright, and fair use.
    • Able to troubleshoot e-resource issues.
    • Experience with metadata (cataloging, indexing, and classification)
    • Knowledge and understanding of the electronic resource lifecycle.
    • Experience with project management.

Project Cataloguer
Temporary Assignment (3 years)

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Project Cataloguer to join our Library team for a temporary assignment of 3 years. The successful candidate will be responsible for cataloguing and organizing a large collection of materials related to a specific project.

JOB PURPOSE:

The Project Cataloging Associate works to ensure accurate description of library resources to improve discovery and support the mission of the library and archives. The person in the position catalogs and classifies a variety of materials in many different languages including: monographs, special collections, serials, electronic or digital resources, archival sources, all according to current library standards.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Original and Copy cataloging: Creates original cataloging records and imports accurate records to improve the discovery of library materials.
    1. Corrects and updates records as part of data enhancement projects to ensures that records align with institutional standards and professional best practices, including RDA, MARC21, OCLC, and LCSH. Works within the LSP Exlibris Alma, as well as Connexion, OCLC and may support metadata creation for other platforms such as Internet Archive and Digital Scriptorium.
    2. Cataloging duties include bibliographic pre-order search and verification, creating original records as required, copy cataloging, retrospective bibliographic conversion, and editing records such as serials records.
    3. Metadata work may involve mapping metadata between schema, adapting metadata for contribution to specific discovery platforms or research interfaces and utilizing metadata to improve discoverability.
  2. Collection Analysis: Supports large initiatives including retrospective reclassification of collections to support collection analysis, maintenance and preservation.
  3. Other – Supports other library and archives staff cataloging and metadata needs and performs other duties as assigned or requested for the general support of the library and museum; which may including providing support on the reference desk and special projects as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited institution in library science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3 – 5 years of experience working in library reference and cataloging.
  • Experience with cataloging tools and systems such as OCLC’s Connexion, ExLibris’ Library Services Platform (LSP) Alma, and MarcEdit.
  • Knowledge of cataloging standards and best practices such as MARC21, RDA, ULAN, ATT, LCSH, LCNAF, and other controlled vocabularies.
  • Experience working in library systems and knowledge of typical cataloging workflow; including collaborative problem-solving, implementing protocols and maintaining awareness of professional best practices.
  • Preferred working knowledge of the library’s LSP – Ex Libris Alma, Microsoft Office, and ability to learn and integrate new software into workflows as needed.
  • Preferred knowledge of art history and experience cataloging art and history materials primarily in English but also in other European languages.

This position has primary responsibility for the daily operations and staff of the Technical Services Department. Responsible for the operation of the ILS System. Associate Library Director, Conception Abbey and Seminary Library, Conception, MO

Conception Abbey and Seminary Library seeks an Associate Library Director to join its library team and transition into leadership as we grow into the future. The successful candidate will spearhead research and access services to patrons by means of outreach in individual and group settings. In addition, this library professional will be conversant with electronic resources as we migrate with our Mobius consortium to integrate library services in FOLIO. This position is a 12-month, faculty-status, non-tenure appointment and reports to the Library Director.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with the library team to ensure that library resources and services best serve the needs of monks, seminarians, faculty and employees.
  • Focuses on and provides leadership for educational programs designed to assist seminarians, faculty, employees and monks in research and access to print and electronic resources.
  • Works with the Technical Services Librarian to successfully achieve the migration of electronic records and catalog to the new FOLIO system and assist with ongoing training of team and patrons.
  • Assists with supervision of the Academic Leaders, a peer-tutoring service promoted by the Academic Dean and available to seminarians in the library.
  • In our small library environment, helps with daily services to patrons in many dimensions of library services.

Qualifications:

  • MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA accredited program
  • At least 3 years of library experience in various capacities with both print and electronic resources
  • Knowledge of the Catholic faith and life
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with an ILS platform such as Sierra or FOLIO
  • Familiarity with the Dewey Decimal System
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Teaching skills and experience would be helpful.

The Sedalia Public Library is looking for an outgoing person to fill a full-time position for the Outreach & Adult Services Librarian. This position is dedicated to roughly 30% Outreach Services in our community and 70% to the Adult Services department.

Salary range is $18.30-$23.86 and is dependent on education and experience. Interlibrary Loan and Reserves Librarian

Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T), one of the world’s leading technological research universities, seeks a dynamic and creative Interlibrary Loan and Reserves Librarian.

Reporting to the Dean of Libraries the Interlibrary Loan and Reserves Librarian provides leadership and management of the interlibrary lending and borrowing and course reserves operations. The librarian develops policies, procedures and workflows for the interlibrary loan and reserves operations including copyright compliance and routine statistical reporting. Additionally, the Interlibrary Loan and Reserves Librarian assesses existing operations and implements new services to meet the University's research, teaching, and learning needs. The librarian supervises both full-time staff and part-time student employees. As a supervisor the librarian is responsible for training and professional development of all direct reports; analyzes and evaluating work processes and workflows; creating/maintaining manuals and documentation; providing verbal and written feedback to employees including performance evaluations; monitoring quality and quantity of work; leading departmental meetings; and providing materials and support for staff.

Other duties include coordinating activities with other library units; planning and supervising major projects; serving on various committees and teams; serving as site coordinator for systems we share across the University of Missouri System; and participating in regional and national library organizations as appropriate and shares expertise with colleagues.

  • Responsible for the administration of ILLiad, RapidILL, and other systems related to interlibrary loan and reserves processing and management.
  • Plans, oversees, and evaluates the daily operations of interlibrary loan and reserves services.
  • Maintains the fiscal integrity of the interlibrary loan process.
  • Resolves satisfactorily problems relating to interlibrary loan, reserves, and copyright issues.
  • Collects and analyzes data for patterns and trends that suggest needed change and anticipates future actions.
  • Evaluates resource alternatives in terms of cost effectiveness, service quality, and larger institutional priorities.
  • Promotes and seeks growth opportunities for interlibrary loan and reserve services.
  • Coordinates high level communications regarding interlibrary loan and reserves policies and procedures with library users, academic units, and external institutions participating in interlibrary loan and reserve services.
  • Builds relationships with other institutions, and coordinates actions with libraries within the University of Missouri System, the state of Missouri, and nationally.
  • Represents the University in facilitating interlibrary loan cooperation through reciprocal interlibrary loan agreements with other institutions and through cooperative arrangements.
  • Maintains statistics and prepares reports related to interlibrary loan and reserves.
  • Keeps the Dean apprised of current issues and developments in interlibrary loan.
  • Participates in library planning, including developing unit and project goals, priorities, and procedures.
  • Develops procedures, sets priorities, assigns work activities, and monitors workflow within assigned areas.
  • Hires, supervises, trains, and evaluates staff. Ensures that personnel policies are correctly and consistently carried out.
  • Works with staff to develop and follow personalized professional development plans.
  • Contributes to grant proposals as appropriate based on library priorities.
  • Actively participates in professional development activities including committees, regional and national organizations, research and publishing, and other professional development opportunities.
  • Performs additional job duties as assigned.
