Rachelle, a member of the MLA's Intellectual Freedom Committee, testified at the board meeting for the Francis Howell School District in April. Please see her amazing testimony in the link or you can read the transcript below. Please share any videos you have of testifying at school and library board meetings. Thanks, Rachelle, for your courage and standing up for Intellectual Freedom!Transcript:My name is Rachelle, and I am a librarian. I am also a member of the Intellectual Freedom Committee of the Missouri Library Association. The Chair of the Intellectual Freedom Committee, Joe, is here with me today. When librarians get their Masters in Library Science we learn about a librarian called Ranganathan. He created what is now known as the 5 laws of library science. Two of these laws are what I would like to talk about tonight. The 2nd law:" every reader their book" and the 3rd law: "every book it's reader."As a reader, my book is Roald Dahl's "Matilda". I saw myself in a little girl who felt lost in her life, but at home in books. My peers made fun of me because I liked to read, and when I felt sad and lonely, "Matilda" was there to show me I wasn't alone. "Matilda" showed me that my love of reading made me special and gave me courage to stand up for what I believe in, just like I am today. In "Matilda", Principal Trunchbull, the antagonist, spins a little girl by her pigtails until she flies into the bushes. This violent act, by itself, seems like something you wouldn't want your children reading, but without that scene the reader wouldn't understand how terrifying the Principal was and how powerful it is when Matilda stands up to her. If "Matilda" had been removed, I would not have felt seen. I would not have felt special, and not realized that, like Matilda, I could stand up for what is right against those bigger and more powerful than myself. To every reader their book, and to every book a reader means that you will not see yourself in every character, you will not see your experience in every story; but someone else WILL. So it is our obligation as librarians, readers, and citizens to give access and diversity of our collection to our readers. Please don't judge an entire book's worth by one scene. Please, let your students find their stories. youtu.be/ZYneNGXDxcM ... See MoreSee Less
