The award-winning St. Louis Public Library serves children and their caregivers with a wide variety of services and materials throughout the City of St. Louis. A skilled, passionate team of youth services staff are charged with serving children inside out 17 locations and outside our libraries through outreach to schools, daycares and other places and institutions. Improving the lives of children and families is central to the Library’s mission and our strategic plan.
The Library is looking for a dynamic and innovative Youth Services Advocate (YSA) who is focused on youth services to guide the Library’s strategy around services to children and teens and their caregivers. The YSA will be a voice for children in the Library’s administration and management, and for the needs and possibilities of the dedicated staff who serve them. The YSA will pursue quality, consistency, and effectiveness in youth services throughout the Library’s diverse locations, neighborhoods, and customers. The successful candidate is knowledgeable about current issues related to working with youth and cutting edge youth services and technology trends.
Responsibilities include overseeing services, programming, and outreach for youth from birth to age 18. The Youth Services Advocate manages change, fosters team building, provides guidance, mentoring, and leadership for the system’s youth services staff, and assists in developing policies, standards, procedures, and training in the area of youth services. The individual in this position represents the library throughout the community and to agencies and organizations serving children and youth. This is an opportunity to experiment with new service models.
Assets to assist the YSA in pursuit of these important goals are a motivated and professional youth services staff, including four regional youth services librarians located at the regional branches, youth services librarian or providers at neighborhood branches, and a youth services outreach team. The Youth Services Advocate reports to the Director of Neighborhood Services (who has a background in youth services) and is a member of the Library’s Leadership management Team. The position will have the support of an Administrative Assistant.
One of the goals of the Library’s current Strategic Plan is to become a center of early childhood literacy, learning, and discovery. Born to Read is a new comprehensive, coordinated, branded initiative, reaching out to families of children, newborn through age eight. The Youth Services Advocate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating early childhood literacy services and programs using the Every Child Ready to Read model, including the Born to Read Program, My 1st Library Card, outreach and community engagement, and grant initiatives.
Preferred qualifications:
A Master’s Degree in Education or in Library or Information Science with a focus on Youth Services, or an equivalent degree with a focus on educating and serving children; with at least three (3) years in a leadership capacity; minimum of six (6) years working with youth. Strong background in children’s services and children’s materials and formats. An understanding of youth development, psychology, and education trends.
Applicants should be energetic leaders with a strong commitment to public service and will have experience working in large, diverse, urban environment. The successful candidate must possess superior oral and written communication skills, as well as demonstrated ability to motivate and inspire staff, and develop and maintain excellent working relationships with others.

Position Responsibilities
Communications:
Support Library Foundation team in the development of messaging and content in donor communications that support the Library Foundation’s work plan and mission.
Develop, coordinate, and manage production of quarterly e-newsletter and annual donor recognition report.
Coordinate and manage the production of all Friends premiums.
Manages all in-kind and paid media advertising.
Develop, coordinate, and manage all Library Foundation print projects.
Monitor and report on the effectiveness of Library Foundation marketing and events using various analytic and/or survey tools.
Provides necessary research data on individual, corporate, and foundation prospects.
Works with Foundation team to assure proper acknowledgement of all donations.
Partner across the organization as needed to support strategic efforts.

Sponsorship
Develop and execute strategies to secure sponsorship support of key library programs and events.
Generate proposals for corporate and individual sponsorship of library programs and events.
Coordinate sponsorship of St. Louis Public Library Foundation fundraiser.
Special Events
Manage volunteer event committee for gala held every two years.
Coordinate content and theme development including graphics and collaterals development and support for fundraiser held every two years.
Develop and manage all aspects of event budgeting and pricing.
Coordinate ticket sales and all revenue for fundraiser.
Coordinate publicity and marketing of fundraiser.
Coordinate and manage all event logistics.
Coordinate and manage all donor events.
Coordinate event volunteers and staff.
Position Qualifications:
Advanced Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite
Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills with experience developing donor communications.
Experience in event planning.
Attention to detail with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Creative thinking.
Ability to be a self-starter, performing well under pressure while managing multiple tasks.
Some evening and weekend work flexibility
