Blogs, Wikis & Other Emerging Trends - Web 2.0
Wednesday, October 4, 9 a.m.-Noon
Presenter: David King, Acting ITS Director, Kansas City Public Library

Web 2.0 offers many social networking services and loads of new emerging trends. This class will focus on tools that library patrons are using, and librarians SHOULD be using like Instant Messaging, social bookmarking services, blogs and RSS, photo sharing services like flickr, etc. We'll explore ideas for library usage of each.


Marketing and Implementing a Research Consultation Service
Wednesday, October 4, 2:15-3 p.m.
Presenter: Crystal D. Gale and Betty Evans, Assistant Professors and Reference Librarians, Missouri State University

This presentation will review the implementation of a research consultation service at Missouri State University. The session will include designing an electronic submission form, marketing the service, setting guidelines for consultations, reviewing the reference interview, and assessing the service.


MACRL Dinner: Using the ACRL Standards for Library Assessment
Wednesday, October 4, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Presenter: William Neal (Bill) Nelson, PH.D., Library Director, Augusta State University, Augusta, GA and chair of the ACRL Standards and Accreditation Committee

Dr. Bill Nelson chairs the ACRL College Libraries Section (CLS) Standards Committee and is a member of the ACRL Task Force on Academic Library Outcomes Assessment. The CLS Standards Committee produced the current edition of the Standards in 2000. He has been appointed to the new ACRL College and Research Libraries Standards Task Force where the CLS, ULS, and CJCLS sections are working together on a common set of standards for all academic libraries. In his presentation, Bill will introduce the ACRL Standard for Libraries in Higher Education (2004) as a standard for assessing academic libraries. This talk will be followed by a presentation on Thursday, October 3 at 10 am, in which he will discuss the standards and library assessment in greater depth.


Continuous Assessment using the ACRL Standards for Libraries in Higher Education

Dr. Nelson introduced the ACRL standards for Libraries in Higher Education (2004) at the MACRL dinner. In this session he will discuss the standards and library assessment in greater depth.


Tour of the University of Missouri Press, and the Libraries Depository
Thursday, October 5, Noon-3 p.m.
Presenters: Beverly Jarrett, Director and Editor-in Chief, University Press, Linda Freech, Associate Director, University Press, and James Keyzer-Andre, Manager, University Libraries Depository

Guests will tour the offices of the University of Missouri Press, warehouse and have the opportunity to view a display of items published by the University Press, highlighting the State of Missouri. Upon completion of the University Press program, guests will be escorted next door to the University of Missouri Libraries Depository for a tour of the processing area and storage module. Light refreshments will be provided. Registration required.

Author Jim Butcher will discuss his path to becoming an author as well as his two bestselling series: the fantasy-morphed-mystery/PI series The Dresden Files (soon to be made a Sci Fi Channel TV series) and the traditional fantasy series Codex Alera.

Information Literacy Assessment and Beyond: An Evolution of Implementation and Analysis
Friday, October 6, 9-9:45 a.m.
Presenter: Laurie Hathman, MLS, Head of Public Services and Kim B. Cullinan, MLISLT, MEd, Reference Librarian

Presenters will discuss how to assess information literacy. Hathman and Cullinan will talk about the process of gathering information and the positives and negatives of the process, as well as the use of Scantron forms and SurveyMonkey for efficient analysis and reports.


Leave No Stone Unturned: Bring Your Holdings to Light with WorldCat Collection Analysis

To make the most of your acquisitions budget, your library needs data that reveals your collection's strengths, gaps, and overlaps in subject-matter coverage. WorldCat Collection Analysis is a web-based service from OCLC that allows libraries to analyze their collections and compare to peer libraries that have their holdings in WorldCat, OCLC's union catalog. We will demonstrate how to compare a collection to that of other OCLC member libraries for age and subject content, generate printable graphs, and export analysis results.


Fourth Annual SISLT Graduate Research Award
Friday, October 6, 11-11:45 a.m.

Beta Phi Mu strives to promote original research activities among library school students in Missouri through as annual competition. In this session, the two winning library school students will each present their research papers. Each will receive a cash award. Sponsored by MACRL, Beta Phi Mu, and SISLT.
