2011 Patt Behler Call-to-Conference
The Patt Behler Call to Conference Award is offered to introduce working librarians to the activities and programs of MLA and CSRT and to encourage involvement and ongoing participation in their professional activites. Eligible candidates are encouraged to apply.
The Children’s Services Roundtable is excited to announce that Chelsea Estes is the 2011 recipient of the Patt Behler Call-to-Conference Award. This award is given to introduce working librarians to the activities and programs of MLA and CSRT and to encourage involvement and ongoing participation in the professional activities of MLA and CSRT.
Chelsea has worked at the Springfield-Greene County Library system for five years. She is currently studying for an MLS degree from the University of Missouri and has taken classes on Reader’s Advisory and Public Libraries. This summer, Chelsea took part in a study abroad program and gave a presentation on US libraries to librarians in England.
Chelsea recently took on the position of Young Adult Associate at the Library Center. The Library Center is the main branch of the Springfield-Greene County Library System. This summer Chelsea took on the Harry Potter Trivia Challenge which hosted 75 kids, teens and their parents in a trivia style contest. Chelsea created the trivia questions and the format for the contest as well as creating a house cup prize. Chelsea also hosts a monthly Teen Library Council which serves as an advisory board for the teen librarian. The Teen Library Council has an active group of 20 members. This summer she hosted a teen/children’s crossover program called a “Stuffed Animal Sleepover” with the Teen Library Council. Children brought a stuffed animal for a Storytime, and then left the stuffed animal overnight. The teens then went around the library taking photos of what the stuffed animals did during their sleepover at the library. The Library Center hosts 3-4 regular teen programs a month that Chelsea oversees, plans and implements. Chelsea works under the Youth Services Manager, so she has also worked at the public service desk in the children’s department of the library in addition to her duties as the young adult librarian.
We are excited that Chelsea will have the opportunity to attend the MLA conference for the first time. She will be able to gather new ideas that she can take back to her library, as well as share her own wonderful ideas with other youth services librarians throughout the state.
